Brian and I spent a couple of days in Martha's Vineyard, where neither of us had ever been despite me being a Massachusetts native. It's quite a sleepy place off-season.

The most interesting thing about the fabled island, I thought, is the
Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association, a centuries-old neighborhood established by Methodists in Oak Bluffs.

You have to walk your bikes among the many charming gingerbread-style houses.

ReplyDeleteWhen we went during "monster shark week" a couple years ago and the island was absolutely crawling with shark fishermen and gawking tourists. We got the feeling a lot of the locals weren't too ecstatic about the invasion, tourist dollars or not.
ReplyDeleteI don't like going places where you get a sense you're not wanted.
ReplyDeleteMy sister and I went to Atlantic City, out of season. We left a day later -- it was deserted and had an eerie feeling.
