We visit Mike's Maze, Smith College mum show and Flayvors of Cook Farm

Hothouse kids at the 2008 Smith College Chrysanthemum Show. Although I go to the bulb show every year, this was the first time I'd seen the mum show, which I recommend. It runs through Nov. 16, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Intriguing exhibit showing hybrid mums and the Smith students who created them going back to the 1920's.

Pom-pom mum. (I don't really know its name.)

Lollipop mums. (At least that's what I call them.)

Starburst mum. (Says me.)

Watching the fish.

Earlier we visited Mike's Maze in Sunderland the last day it is open this year.

Navigating the maze.

Fantastic Cyclops-eye camera obscura made of a mirror and lens in the roof of a gazebo.

Hayride.

Feeding the alpaca.

View of Mount Sugarloaf.

Friendly alpaca.

We finished the day at Flayvors of Cook Farm in Hadley. Meghan's favorite calf there.

I recommend the pumpkin ice cream!

  1. Aah, I'm glad you got that video, I was wondering what that cyclops 'camera' was all about, and we didn't get a chance to get to the maze this year...

BTW, I ran into your resident entomologist Saturday in Deerfield; he was immediately identifiable with his characteristic ski cap and 'school marm' glasses..!

  2. Tony -- Brian said he met someone who identified himself as Tony and that he said, "THE Tony," and you said, "Maybe." I was so bummed I didn't get to see you both. Looks like the new bloggerette could be here before the year is up!

  4. School marm...!? I resemble that remark... Sorry Mary and Tony I was too busy rounding up the students that I brought to Cider days in time to catch the tour of the orchard to stalk, I mean talk to Tony, more than a few seconds on the fly (pardon the expression)...
