It's amazing how a spectacular sunset can suddenly materialize. I was never a sunset buff, but Brian grew up practically organizing his days around seeing them. Sometimes we get in the car at the last minute to see if we can catch a great sunset somewhere. But the view from our house isn't too shabby either.
My family, I would describe as water people. Brian once said he only gathered how much we organized our lives around water after watching hours of 8 mm movies my dear dad had taken over the years and eventually had assembled on a VHS tape. I have so many good memories involving swimming. We lived in Austin, Tx. for pretty much the entire 80s, a magical place because of the presence of the cold water swimming spot just about right in the center of town, Barton Springs. Snapped one of my favorite photos ever of my brother Billy and Ana one January!
Here I am with a nephew probably days off from giving birth to Nicky (I swam the day I delivered both Ana and Nicky) at the Deep Eddy fresh water pool in Austin.
I was a lifeguard in high school at both lakes in Pittsfield, Pontoosuc and Onota, although Onota was always first in my heart because my dad would take us sailing on a little sailfish most summer weekends. It was so light, he carried it on top of his head from the car to the water. Here's a postcard by photographer William H. Tague of Onota probably around the time I would have been a lifeguard there in the early 1970s. I keep thinking it might be me combing my hair in the foreground.
Nice post Mary Carey.
