Yay, it's Saturday. Ran by these two characters on North East Street.
Two cartoons in this week's New Yorker kind of hit home. A guy suggests his mother take up a hobby or addiction. I remember suggesting to a working class Mexican-American woman in South Texas who told me she would like to lose weight and that she was also feeling a little lonely despite being married that she could make losing weight a fulfilling journey in itself (although not in those words.) We were both in our early 20s and staying thin had been keeping me pretty busy for a few years. Now, Nicky is suggesting blogging is becoming an addiction.
Roz Chast on how kids see middle age people with MySpace pages. I wonder if kids see middle age people with unfocused blogs as pathetic. Probably.
A hobby (even some addictions) is always good. A lot of people sit around bored because they've never developed a hobby. My parents are a case in point. They worked extrememly hard (and smart)all their lives, and are very successful. They retired early, but at times they goes nuts with boredom because they never took the time to develop any hobbies.

By the way, an unfocused middle aged blog is still miles above a focused teeny-bopper myspace page. Ever read those things? Stomache turning.
Oh, I could go on and on about these social networking sites and what I think of them, but I suspect that to do so would mark me as a grumpy old curmudgeon. All the same, I must say the pages, when I come across them, make my eyeballs all twitchy. That, and I usually end up shouting something about spellcheck at the screen. Jeeeeeeeeez.
