Amherst types

Sometimes, when you start thinking about the past and how irrecoverable it is, it's helpful to reflect on how not-so-shabby the present is. A good thing about reporting is you get to meet a lot of people, which keeps you focused on today.

Met Amherst character David Keenan's brother Mark Keenan for the first time. He's a security and campus monitor at the high school. "He's my brother and I love him," Keenan said about Dave. Sometimes, though, Dave drives him nuts, he added. Ah, siblings. Can't live with them; can't live without them.

  1. Mary Carey, Your reflections on loss are interesting and meaningful to me. I lost my father in December 2005. As a result, I have a sense of the loss you suffered when your dad passed and since then.

For a year, albeit infrequently, my dad would come back to me in my dreams. He spoke to me directly and wanted to engage me in some particular activity such as going for a drive or having a talk. Frequently the dream would end as he drove away, down a hill, left at the bottom and off into the distance until he disappeared. I would stand watching him go.

When I woke, I was happy to have had the visit, sad about the loss and unsure about what it meant.

It may be that the loss of your father has made you more aware of the less traumatic losses life entails over time. The growth that sustains us requires that we leave things behind such as family trips to swimming hole during our youth, christmases, and other wonderful memories that when coupled with the loss of a parent can turn from uniquely personal joyous elements of self to unqiuely personal aspects of loss and melancholy.

You may be an extrovert, not because you feel comfortable as the center of attention but because you find other peoples interests and passions invigorating.

Do David and Mark have a brother named Joe? Joe was in my class at ARHS '78. For a time, Joe and I were alter boys at St Brigid's.

  2. Thanks for your thoughtful comments, O'Reilly. Joe Keenan probably is brother of Dave's, but I don't really know much about the family, despite the fact I live on a cul-de-sac named after Dave's father. I didn't know he had a brother Mark at the High School.
